Growing your organic traffic with Pinterest is easier than you think
Rich pins refer to Pinterest pins that have your website name and icon displayed underneath the pin image, easily directing users to the pin’s source (you!). In case you’re confused, you can check out recent pins from my site here. You’ll notice that they are all from my website.
If you’re on WordPress, setting up rich pins is incredibly easy and very beneficial for growing your Pinterest following. Since activating rich pins on my Pinterest account, the number of people who viewed my profile and pins has nearly doubled. I’ve also noticed that my pins are starting to gain more traction, likes, and re-pins overall. Tons of readers and customers find new sites to explore and products to buy on Pinterest, so standing out from the crowd will help your blog or biz get noticed.
Did I mention this tutorial only takes 5 minutes tops? It’s easy peasy! Follow these simple steps to learn how to set up rich pins on Pinterest for your blog or business. Woooooo!

Step One: Install the “Yoast” SEO plugin
In order to set up rich pins, Pinterest requires you to add certain meta tags to your site. Luckily, the Yoast plugin adds these for you! No confusing tech work here, folks! In case you’re unfamiliar with Yoast, it’s a search engine optimization (SEO) plugin, which can boost your blog in search engine rankings, when used properly. Whether you set up rich pins or not, I highly recommend installing and using Yoast. It’s a great tool! You can read more of my thoughts about it here.
Anyways, for this tutorial, you’ll need to install and activate Yoast. After Yoast is activated, go to the Yoast’s “Features” tab. Make sure the “Advanced settings pages” is “Enabled” and that will enable the metadata. Then we’re on to the next step!
Step Two: Visit the “Rich Pin Validator”
Go to Pinterest’s Rich Pin Validator, and plug in a link to any blog post on your site (it CANNOT be the link to your homepage). It doesn’t matter which blog post and you only need to do one. Click “validate.”
Step Three: Apply!
After validating, you should see a message that says “your pin’s been validated!” Then, click “apply now.” A pop up will come up with your website’s domain and “HTML tags” selected. Click “apply now” once again. Congrats, you’re done! That was easy, eh?
Now, you’ll just need to wait for a few days while Pinterest approves your application. Once it’s approved, your pins will all display your website name and icon. Hint: the icon displayed is your “favicon,” or the little icon that shows up next to your site name in your browser bar.

Hmmm I can’t figure out why, but this isn’t working for me. My site is validated in Pinterest, and I’ve had the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin installed for a while. It says “unable to retrieve any data from your URL.” Any ideas?
Hi Amye! When you paste your link, are you pasting a link to a specific post or to your blog’s homepage? It has to be to a specific post — any post. 🙂
Yes, I’m definitely using a specific post…when you say “Make sure the box is ticked next to “add open graph meta data.”” my Social has tabs for Facebook, Twitter and Google+ but not Pinterest. Is that why?

I have a question about using the Yoast. I have it installed and love making sure the little light turns green before I post. Sometimes my pins show up rich and other times they don’t. I’m not sure I’m filling out the SEO portion right. Any tips?
That’s strange that sometimes they are rich and other times they aren’t! Are the ones that aren’t old pins or new pins? To be honest, I’m not entirely sure why that would be. Maybe emailing Pinterest could help.

But I do have a question that I’m hoping you can provide some assistance with? I already have the Yoast plug-in installed on my blog. As per your instructions, I can see that there is a “add open graph meta data” check-box under the Facebook tab (which is checked!), but under the Pinterest tab, I see a link to verify your site with Pinterest, and then a blank box where I’m supposed to paste said verification. The thing is, I verified my site forever ago, and I have no idea what my verification code is anymore. Does this matter? Do I need this in order to have this work properly? Or dos the “rich pin verification” override the old one?

I’m not familiar with that part of Yoast, but I “verifying” your site is different than enabling rich pins as far as I know. I think that if you’ve already verified your site in the past, you don’t need to worry about doing it again. 🙂

Hi there, any idea how to the the link with the globe when you hover an image? it says “Learn more at XXXX” where XXXX is the site the pin comes from with a direct link without going into the image first.

That’s a great question and I wish I knew the answer! The only reason you need Yoast is so that you can check the “add open graph meta data” box. Does Jetpack have that?
Also, are you using an SEO plugin already? If not, I highly suggest adding Yoast anyways — it’s awesome. 🙂

Nitty gritty questions: Do you have to have a wordpress site for Yoast? If you have ie, squarespace or shopify, can you use Yoast? Can you have rich pins with etsy (I bet you’re gonna tell me no 🙁 )
Hi Vanessa! I’m not too familiar with SquareSpace or Shopify, but I believe Yoast is exclusive to WordPress. You might want to check on their website though. 🙂 As for rich pins on Etsy, I’m also not 100% sure about this, but rich pins, as far as I know, require you to own your own site, so I don’t know that it would work. 🙁
I think I am getting ahead of myself anyways 🙂 Once I build my site (besides etsy), I’m sure the hosting site or some other fab blogger besides you will have a tutorial available. Still, great to learn about them from this post. Thank you!
Etsy pins are already Product Rich Pins. (Occasionally there’s a glitch and it won’t show the price and in-stock status, but that’s pretty rare.)

Hi Kate! That’s an interesting strategy — is there a reason you do it that way? To be honest, I’m not 100% sure if that would work for rich pins, but I’m pretty sure it will, as the rich pins are sourced from the website link, which would be the same. 🙂
Just tried it and the rich pins worked 🙂 I do it that way because for my blog posts, I prefer horizontal or square photos with no font, but I think vertical/collage/photos with font are supposed to be better for Pinterest, so I make a separate version of my blog post photos for Pinterest 🙂

I am very happy to see this great tip! However, Yoast didn’t work for me, I got a 500 Internal server error 🙁 My site is ok but I cannot access my admin/dashboard. I searched the web for fix but none helped. So I deleted the plugin through ftp and I can access my admin page again. Sigh.. :'(

I have a Pinterest question that I’m wondering if you can help me with: I now know that having lots of pins with 0 repins will lower your ranking in Pinterest, but I’m a bit confused about how repins works. For example, I pin a lot of recipes from really big names, like Kris Carr, and when I looked through my recipe board, a lot of them have 0 repins, but I can’t imagine that I’m the only one who has repined this in all of Pinterest! Does this just mean that no one has specifically repined my copy of the pin? Thank you so much! x

I just did this and starting adding photos from my blog on Pinterest, but it doesn’t show up on all of them! The first one I did had the grey icon next to my name, so I Googled how to change it (the favicon). After I did that it looked perfect. (Pin with my name under it and a nice favicon) but then I added two more and my name isn’t on them at all! I’m probably doing something wrong, but I’m not quite sure what..

Hey Melyssa, this is awesome! Thanks for the tips! I have a question though about image sizes which has been cracking my head since sometime! I know images following the vertical sizing get repinned more but if you’re using auto posting from your WordPress across different platforms and they all require different sizes what image size works best for your blog post? Is there any specific size to follow? Or anything you would recommend?

First, I’d love to make sure I understand what you mean about posting from different platforms. Are you referring to different blogs that you manage? I recommend choosing a width that it the size of your blog content area, then multiplying that by 3 for the height. This will give you a great Pinterest ready image size!
Hey Melyssa, actually what I meant was Facebook, IG and Pinterest prefer different optimal size for images. A custom image size tailored for each social media looks good rather than using one image size across the different social media. They may be cut off or look weird? Do you have this issue? I’m trying to figure if there’s one size that looks good on Facebook, IG and Pinterest.
I understand! Tailoring your images is great, but if you are looking to simplify, you can use a large square image for your photos. I would still recommended doing a fully vertical one for Pinterest.

These instructions are incredibly easier than those provided on the Pinterest Developers page, and I think I’ve gotten about half way there. BUT, I don’t have a Social tab in Yoast SEO – is it a premium feature?
When running pages through the validator, it says they are validated, but I don’t get a check mark next to “Rich Pins Enabled” like I do next to Site Name and Favicon. Thoughts?
Hey Brittany! So, Yoast may have changed the look of their plugin. Hover over the “SEO” section in your WordPress sidebar (for Yoast), then click “Social.” Then, click “Facebook” and you should see a checkbox to “add open graph meta data.” That should solve things. 🙂

I followed your steps by doing what you said in the Yoast plugin (waiting on my “approval”), then I came across this article and followed those steps too. It immediately added my favicon and website name to all the pins from my site, so again I’m just wondering if your description of “rich pins” is any different than what I achieved via the Pinterest help article.

Yes it does! You would need to grab the tag from Pinterest to verify your site first. (You can go to Advance > Code Injection then copy it into the header section. Then add the meta date for your pin type (posting link in sec), Then, you would just need to grab a link from your blog and put it into the Pin Validator on Pinterest.

To inject the code in Squarespace, you would go to Settings> Advanced> Code Injection and put the meta data in the heading.
Then all you need to do is plug in a URL here: https://developers.pinterest.com/tools/url-debugger/

Hmmm, that is weird that you do not see the settings! There should definitely be a social tab.
Hey! Under the new Yoast you’ll need to go to the ‘Social’ section and then click the ‘Open Graph’ checkbox under the FACEBOOK tab. That will enable it for Pinterest as well. 🙂

I feel absolutely ridiculous because these are the easiest and most clear instructions ever, but I can’t seem to make it work. 🙁 I have my site confirmed, the open graph checkbox is clicked, but when I go to verify it I get this error message
“The data we scraped from your site could not be validated. Please make sure all required tags are present and you aren’t serving different pages depending on different user agents.”

After a day of battling I gave up on All in One (which seemed to be preventing my rich pins from showing up correctly even though the code was there). Once I switched over to YOAST, it was as easy as you described! You rock!

Hi, Melyssa, thanks for the awesome article. My rich pins are now active. However I tried to enable rich pins for my CUSTOM SHORTENED URL. The validator says it’s active. But still not showing up in pins. Can you enlighten me with anything on this issue?
My best advice would be to contact Pinterest support for the shortened URL. They’ll know exactly what is happening! >_<
Melyssa, I’ve validated my account and set up Rich Pins. However, Pinterest wants me to add a line of code to my html. That kind of thing always scares me – do you have any posts about this or recommendations on making sure I do it right?

Being on a Mac should be an issue, but you may try a different browser! Any website with posts should be able to be verified on Pinterest. I’d also recommend reaching out to their help center! 🙂

So I’ve managed to get the rich pins appearing, in that my recipes pins come up with ingredients, etc., but I noticed that many pins, when hovered over, come up with “Learn More at http://www….” next to a small worldwideweb icon. What if you are not in wordpress, but in wix? will this work? do you have to have a self hosted website, or will a free website work?
Hi Sue! Rich Pins are not compatible with Wix but they are just a small part of the strategy and shouldn’t have a huge effect on your results. However, I recommend switching from Wix because it doesn’t have great SEO, you don’t own your content, and it’s difficult to switch to another provider down the line. Is there anything you’re hesitant about with snagging your own domain and hosting?
Yes I wanted my own self hosted domain and got one with WordPress originally, but was unhappy with how limited I was because of my lack of knowledge in technical things. Wix was more guided and took me through steps in terms I could understand.

I was super excited about this post because I’ve tried setting up rich pins before and failed miserably. Unfortunately, I followed all of your instructions and I’m in the exact same place I was before. I already had Yoast, and it was already set as you specified. I even tried reapplying for rich pins, but Pinterest simply said that I had already been validated and my pins were already on Pinterest. Please tell me you have a solution! Hey Amanda! I’m assuming you’re on Blogger and if you are, go to the blog post you are trying to validate. On the right side, make sure the “Search Description” is filled out. You can do this by simply copying and pasting the first couple lines of your blog post into that field.

Hi Melyssa! Love the article, but I’ve hit a roadblock from the get-go. I’ve downloaded Yoast SEO on WP, but when I go into the settings I don’t see a social tab. In fact, I could not find anything about Facebook in any of the settings tabs. Do I need to purchase Yoast Premium? Or has the plugin changed since you last wrote this post? Any help would be great, thanks!
If you go to your WP Dashboard and hover over “SEO” you should see an option to click on “Social”. Once there, there should be a “Facebook” tab that you can click on. Do you have the latest version of Yoast installed?

To respond to @EverythingIsNerdiful’s comment as well, since I just downloaded the newest free version of Yoast, I didn’t see a “Social” or a “Facebook” tab (I think they’ve updated it since I downloaded Yoast personally a while back).

Argh!! I have WordPress and Yoast, went into Yoast and could not find a “social” tab anywhere. Just “Advanced settings pages” which was already activated. Is that all I need or am I missing something? (Trying really hard not to mess this up, since my web developer isn’t available for couple of weeks and he has never done anything with Pinterest.)
Yoast has updated their plug-in so I’ll have to update this post as well.
Just to echo what @EverythingIsNerdiful’s said, go to the Yoast’s “Features” tab and make sure the “Advanced settings pages” is “Enabled” and that will enable the metadata. Then follow step 2 from the post and link to any post on your site on the “Rich Pins Validator” and you should be all set up! Good luck 🙂

Hey Olga! There was a similar previous comment from someone who got it to work by “turning on the Schema Type in the Theme’s options for SEO.” Try that out and let me know if that works for you. 🙂

Hi Melyssa! After some time I am finally able to get back on this. Turns out that some themes without SEO optimization have some trouble with this method. After I switched to the Cheerup theme (which is optimized also in the code/tags) I could validate rich pins in the blink of an eye 🙂 So happy to cross this off my to-do list!

Oh my goodness, you SAVED me! I’ve been trying to get rich pins for months, got my web guy on it, and even he was having trouble getting the codes and other technical stuff. Okay thanks so much! We are building an online studio with courses on Teachable so we figured we would just use their blog service to start with. WordPress has always been so confusing for me but I haven’t looked at their pre-built themes as much yet.
Is having a WordPress site/blog the only available way to enable rich pins?
WordPress can be a bit confusing but if you start with a good drag and drop theme like Divi, you should be able to figure it our fairly quickly!
No, you can enable rich pins through other platforms as well.

Hi! I just watched your webinar yesterday and I have since enabled rich pins for the Shopify portion of my website (Online store is hosted by Shopify, Main site + blog are hosted by WordPress). I then tried to enable rich pins for the WordPress portion of my website but it keeps telling me it can’t find anything. I have everything set up in Yoast where it should be submitting the right data. Do you know if you can enable rich pins for two separate domains under one account? (Website is domain.com, Online shop is shop.domain.com – which it sees as two different domains) I’ve e-mailed Pinterest but haven’t heard back yet. Thanks for the help! 🙂
Hey Meaghan! To my knowledge, you can only submit rich pins for one domain per account.

I have a wix website. Is it possible to use Yoast with Wix?
Hey Gabby! I’m not too familiar with Wix but I believe Yoast is only compatible with WordPress sites.
Gabby, I also use Wix and just figured out how to get Rich Pins enabled, took 5 minutes from A-Z. If you’re blog is “articles” which I assume it is, just use this code and edit it with your information.
Step 1: go into your blog manager
Step 2: select any post
Step 3: go to the end of the post
Step 4: click on the html option (it’s in the top menu where image is), in the html box
Step 5: add this code:
I kept everything except the date/time since I don’t show date/time on my posts
Step 6: save and publish your site
Step 7: go to the pinterest validator (https://developers.pinterest.com/tools/url-debugger/)
Step 8: copy/paste the unique URL for the blog post you added the html code to and click Validate
Step 9: the validation is immediate, you will see your site info, including logo, favicon and site name (verify everything is as you want it, if not, go to your Wix page and make edits). If you do make edits, just click the Fetch New Scrape Information button to “refresh” the data Pinterest grabbed from your site.
Step 10: Apply
Step 11: Go check your inbox because my approval came in immeditately.
Step 12: The email will have a link to view your new rich pins, click it and smile, You’re Done!

wow. I could not find any other blog on how to use Yoast to make “rich”pins. Thanks so much. Now, I haven’t launched my blog yet but i’m setting up my pinterest business acount and getting all that out of the way. Can I still do this before my blog has been launched? I still have an”under construction” when you go to my domain.
Even though you have an “Under Construction” in place, if you have blog posts published, you should be able to enable rich pins. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes. 🙂

I am getting the same message as well. And I also cannot send a message request. If you can’t send a message request, you can’t get it fixed?! arghh Please let me know if anyone finds anything out! I’ve tried updating my computer, using safari & chrome, but no luck.

Hi! I listened to your webinar and read this article. There were a lot of really helpful tips, but I can not figure out how to use rich pins with my Wix website. Do you know how I would be able to do this? And if I can not use rich pins is it possible to use keywords on a regular pin?
I’m not very familiar with Wix but I don’t believe Rich Pins are compatible with it. However, you can definitely use keywords for regular pins. 😀

Unfortunately not, I put in a help desk ticket at Wix and they were very unhelpful. They didn’t even answer my question so I don’t think rich pins are supported. I’m finding sooo many limitations with Wix that I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet and move my site over to WordPress :-/

How can you tell the difference between rich and non-rich pins once they are published? Is there any place you can go to review your list of rich pins? 🙂
Hey Erica! You can simply look at your pins and if the title of your pin appears and is in bold, then it has converted to a rich pin. 🙂

Ok I will give it a go! Completely new at this stuff and I was just worried I would get on Pinterests bad side if I got denied -which really doesn’t make ANY sense! But that’s what caused me to not pull the trigger

Hi Melyssa, Thanks for the article! Do you know if Pinterest still shows titles in bold? I was just approved for rich pins, and my titles and descriptions are in Yoast SEO (Facebook section), but only the descriptions show up on Pinterest.
Hi Christine! Yes, titles should still be in bold. I would recommend adjusting things around with Yoast a bit to see if the configuration is just off.

Just an FYI, only certain Squarespace themes support Pinterest rich pins. Mine didn’t support it, so I’m in the process of changing my theme, which is fine because I was ready for something different anyway. But something for you to know to prepare your peeps.

HI Melyssa. Nice explanation on how to get rich pins. Is Pinterest acting up right now? I re-wrote a Pin description to meet my sponsors requests and Pinterest will not change the description no matter running it thru the rich pin validator multiple times.

Hi Amber, I sent a message to Pinterest helpdesk with a screenshot of the error message and the url I was trying to validate. A very helpful helpdesk person confirmed that the error was definitely on the Pinterest end and that he would get a tech to look at it. It now works this morning without me having to change anything on my end. So…. if this was a global issue it is now sorted, so I suggest giving it another go now. If it is a site specific problem and yours still doesn’t work, contact Pinterest help center and sit tight. I wasted days messing with plugins and code to no avail, I suggest not doing that. 🙂 Otherwise you could try Nadine’s solution. Good luck!

Hi Talisa and Dione. I ran into this very problem for days and couldn’t figure it out. Today, I had a Eureka moment. The Yoast plugin wasn’t working for my wordpress theme for some reason. I tried a few other ones, and ran into the same problem (Open Graph, Schema). The one that did the trick for my theme was SEO Framework. I don’t know why or how, since I’m not a coder/designer, but as of two hours ago (it only took 11 minutes to get approved by Pinterest!), I am now able to use rich pins and am finally starting to look around for things to pin! It is possible that the timing was coincidental with Pinterest fixing the problem on their end, but I’m so glad you found a solution and thanks for sharing it here…. this has also been messing with me for days (and I suspect a lot of people)!. Yoast/Wordpress combination is now working fine with rich pins via Open Graph just like Melyssa said, so if you want to keep things simple you can possibly now ditch the extra plugin. Pinterest have confirmed there was a technical glitch on their end, at least for my case. Kindest regards and enjoy your pinterest experience! 🙂

Hmm…are you making sure to include a URL to your blog post and not your home page? Beyond that, it might be a Yoast SEO issue (if you’re using that) or a Pinterest issue. There have been some awesome recommendations for similar situations in the comments below so I would definitely recommend checking them out to see if one of those solutions help. Good luck, Kattie! 🙂

Ah, unfortunately Rich Pins are not supported on the Wix platform at this time. You would need to switch to a different website builder such as WordPress or Squarespace in order to enable Rich Pins.
With that being said, if you want to stay with Wix, Pinfinite Growth would still be very effective for your traffic growth as almost all of the techniques and strategies would be applied the same as with WordPress.

Question – I applied for rich pins and was approved. But I never got the stats on my pins that everyone says they have (little bars in the bottom right hand corner). I validated my url again. Do you think that will work? I hear everyone mentioning how helpful it is for measuring engagement level with pins. Thanks!
Hi June, congrats on getting approved for rich pins! 🙂 Do you mean the stats like # of re-pins? Also, did you convert your Pinterest account to a Business account? Business accounts provide tons of free, valuable stats that you can dig into 🙂
So I’ve seen a few bloggers reference seeing engagement stats easily accessed on each pin (it looks like little bars to the left of the re-pin count. I have a business account and rich pins…I reapplied and they said it was approved. Maybe I’ll see it show up over the next few days. Perhaps it’s a tailwind feature??
Well I confirmed that I have Yoast Seo plugin and the advanced settings pages is enabled but I cannot find anywhere in the settings to add the meta tag provided by pintrest. I could add it to the header.php file in the editor but you stated that it shouldn’t be on the home page. What am I missing?

Can you have Rich Pins with a non-WP site? I have a client who has a Jimdo site, and in setitng up her Pinterest account, I am not seeing any place to apply for Rich Pins.

I downloaded the Yoast plugin but it looks like it is just for wordpress? I sell on Etsy and am trying to get rich pins but am having trouble. Any help?!
Hi Kari! Yes, the Yoast plugin is unfortunately just for WordPress. Rich pins will not work on Etsy, but they will work if you have your own blog or domain that you’re pinning from.
I know this is a long shot, but I thought I’d ask it anyway. I have Yoast activated and have the open graph setting enabled. However, when I go to try to validate a blog post I get an error message that says, “We were unable to retrieve any data from your URL.” However, it also says that rich pins are enabled, but the rich pin data does not show up. Any idea what might be causing this error? I contacted Pinterest but only received a link to their page “Enable Rich Pins on Your SIte” which is soooo NOT helpful!!
Hi Regina 🙂 I am not sure if this will help, but we shall see 🙂 Are you entering a link to your homepage URL vs. a blog post? That MIGHT do the trick. You need to validate your homepage 🙂

Hi Judy, Oh no! I am not sure how to remedy this. Pinterest is constantly changing their platform, so I wonder if it is a small glitch. I hope this gets fixed for you soon!

Compared to yours, it seems everything is same. And Pinterest had sent me an e-mail which said that my rich pins approved.

Oh no, I am not sure why this is happening, Veronica. I recommend trying it again, and/or reaching out to support (if your template was created by someone, or you have a developer that you work with).

Hi Alexanndra, You may not receive an approval email, but you should be able to tell when it’s working, as your pins will change in appearance and have the bolded text and ‘icon’ of your blog appear automatically. Did you notice a change in how your pins are displaying? It generally only takes a few hours to go through.

Hi Amy, Changing your Favicon is all dependent on what platform you are using to host your website. I recommend Googling a tutorial. It’s typically pretty easy to swap out. 🙂

I feel really lost, because it seems so easy and nobody is asking this, but I cant figure it out! It’s supposed to be automatic? I read a lot about adding meta tags to the head part and I’ve done that (i think) and still nothing 🙁 I hope you can help me.
Hi Leticia! 🙂 If you’d like to automate your pinning process, I recommend looking into the Looping feature using a tool called Board Booster, or scheduling pins with a tool called Tailwind. I recommend both of these and use them in tandem. I teach the specific strategy in my paid course, Pinfinite Growth. 🙂

I’m using WP and Yoast. All my info for Rich Pin validator is showing up except the “author” field. Any suggestions on getting this to show up?
