Social media is, without a doubt, one of the most important components to a well-oiled blog and business. But creating social media promotions on the spot each day can be tiresome, time consuming, and sometimes, impossible. That’s why today we’re exploring five excellent programs to help you schedule your social media marketing in advance. These programs are great for all of your favorites, like Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as others, such as LinkedIn or Google+. Ready to stop spending hours a day on social media? I’ve got you covered.
Buffer + Hootsuite
Buffer and Hootsuite are excellent programs for scheduling Facebook and Twitter promotions, though they also offer scheduling to Google+ and LinkedIn. I grouped them here together because they offer very similar services, and you likely would only need to use one or the other. The biggest difference I’ve found is that Buffer now has the option to schedule pins to Pinterest, too. I currently use Hootsuite to schedule my social media and it makes the process very easy.
Here’s how it works: In each program, you first add the social networks that you want to post to. Then, you create your posts in the program or by using a browser extension. You can either select a specific date and time for the post to publish, or you can “autopublish” it. I use the autopublish feature exclusively, because it speeds up the process even more. Autopublish* means that you’ve pre-selected a date and time range that you’d like posts to be published (for example, Monday-Friday, 8am-7pm). Then, you select how many posts you’d like to publish each day (for example, 5 per day). When you click the “autopublish” button, it automatically adds your posts into a queue, based on the schedule you selected. It.is.awesome. Here’s an example of Hootsuite’s autoscheduling system:

If you set it to post 5 times per day, then you could write out 35 tweets and have an entire week’s worth of social media promotions done in one day.
Pricing: You can use both of these programs for free, but for more freedom, they offer paid plans as well, starting at about $10.
*Note, the “autopublish” verbiage is exclusive to Hootsuite, but Buffer has an almost identical process.

CoSchedule
CoSchedule is a WordPress plugin that acts as both an editorial calendar and a social media scheduling tool. I’ve written about CoSchedule before, because it does offer some great features in one piece of software. Not only can you create a drag-and-drop editorial calendar in order to plan your posts in advance, but you can also pre-schedule your social media promotions for each of those blog posts. CoSchedule supports Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, and Tumblr. It also offers some neat analytics to see how many times your posts have been shared.
Here’s an example of what it looks like to schedule social media promotions for a post in CoSchedule (note: this is a post that has already been published, so you can see the social sharing analytics, too).

One thing that eventually led me away from CoSchedule is that it’s a great tool for scheduling promotions for a particular blog post, but it’s not really great for scheduling promotions of other people’s work. For example, I like to share interesting posts from other blogs and websites, but CoSchedule doesn’t make it as easy as Hootsuite or Buffer to simply add social media content from other websites to an “autoschedule.” It IS a nice tool for working with teams and planning a digital editorial calendar, but wasn’t my favorite for scheduling my social media promotions, though many people love it.
Pricing: Currently, their least expensive plan is $10/month, but they offer a free 14-day trial.

Ahalogy
Ahalogy is exclusively for scheduling Pinterest posts, and while I haven’t explored it as much as I’d like to, I’ve heard great things about it from other bloggers. In order to join, you’ll have to request an invite. Once approved, you’ll be joined into their network of pinners, and will have the option both to schedule your own pins and to pin content from their “network of high-end content creators.”
Ahalogy allows you to either autoschedule your posts or manually select a time and date for them to be published. It also has some other neat tools, like “suggested words” you should use in your pin’s description and PicMonkey built right into the site so that you can edit your Pinterest images.
Here’s an example of what it looks like (using the Ahalogy browser extension) to pin something form a website. You can edit the description, select a board, and put it into your schedule.

Latergramme
Lastly, Latergramme enables you to schedule your Instagram posts. Unlike the other social networks mentioned in this post, Instagram doesn’t actually allow you to post automatically. As a way to bypass that rule, Latergramme invited a new system, where you can schedule all of your posts ahead of time and receive a push notification when your Instagram image is ready to be published. All you have to do is swipe to open it and then publish your pre-made Instagram photo onto your account. I haven’t used Latergramme yet, but it looks very enticing and useful. I’ll definitely have to take it for a spin.

Overall, scheduling social media promotions is extremely valuable, both because it allows you to finish a week’s worth (or more!) of social media marketing in just a couple hours and because it enables you to create more stream-lined and intentional social media feeds. Social media is an incredible way to grow your blog traffic and sales, so being intentional and consistent are surefire ways to breed success for your blog or business.

Thanks for sharing, Melyssa! I tried both Hootsuite and Buffer, but I prefer the second one. I don’t know if it’s been changed, but I didn’t like that Hootsuite published your images on Twitter as links instead of actual images (like Buffer does). I am currently using the free plan, so I can’t try their Pinterest option, but I’d love to, it looks so useful! I’m going to try Ahalogy 🙂
Y’know, I actually like Buffer more too and I think I’ll be switching back! You should totally check out Ahalogy though!
This is amazing! I’ve been curious about Buffer, but I’ve never heard of Ahalogy. It sounds incredible, though!
Have you ever tried Tweetdeck for scheduling twitter posts? That’s what I use right now, it’s free and can be used to schedule tweets. Though it doesn’t make it simple to share other people’s work, and can be a little clumsy, it does show you a heap of information at once which I like.
Great post! I’m thrilled that you showed a little of the inside scoop!
xx Sydney
Definitely check out Buffer — they have a free plan too so you can test it out! And I haven’t used Tweetdeck for scheduling, but I’ve heard it can be useful, too!
I definitely need to try these out. Right now I just am constantly on my computer haha.
Could you do a post on how to use pintrest to grow traffic? I just don’t totally get what to share there.
Great post as always! xx http://gymbagsandjetlags.com
I tooootally know how that feels, Pia. And definitely! Got some Pinterest stuff up my sleeve to share, too. 🙂
I love the sound of Latergramme, sometimes I don’t want to publish something there and then so this would be ideal. Thanks for sharing Melyssa!

Glad to help! I want to start using Latergramme, too. Sounds so useful!
I schedule all my promo tweets but not on pinterest or instagram so those do sound interesting! I would have to take lots of photos and get them all lined up! x
Jasmin Charlotte
Yeah! I don’t schedule for Pinterest or Instagram yet either, but setting aside a couple hours each week to do ALL my social media is super duper appealing to me.
I love Hootsuite and Latergramme. Ahalogy sounds interesting – I’ll have to look into that one.
Kristi | Be Loverly
Glad you like Latergramme! I need to get started with that one.
This is awesome! I do not currently schedule any social media posts (blog is currently acting as a loving journal to keep up with our sweet new baby) but I would love to once I can return my writing to a more structured state. Thanks for the tips!
Glad to help, Lindsey! Congrats on your new baby. So awesome. 🙂
Latergramme is probably my favorite of this bunch, but so is Instagram so that makes sense. 🙂
I need to check it out! I don’t think I’ve posted to Instagram in like a week >_<
haha. This week was a tough week for me and Instagram, too. TakeOff is another app that does similar things to Latergramme but it gives some analytics because it’s associated with CrowdFire. However, I find that it can be glitchy so I don’t love it.
Nope, right now…. I’m using all social media on my own. And as you say it’s very time consuming!! To be honest I get tired of this. But, reading this great post now I see I can get some time for me, while scheduling tweets and other social media that I use. Very helpful!
Tayrina
I tooootally know how that feels, Tayrina. It’s such a time suck when you do it on the spot. Definitely check out these resources, it will save you a lot of time.
I am intrigued by Latergramme. As inconvenient it is to not allow auto-publishing to Insta. I think it helps preserve the authenticity and ‘real-time’ feel of the platform compared to many other social networks!

Would highly recommend Latergramme! I love it especially for when you want to post an image for a giveaway or for a blog post, as opposed to just an image from everyday life.

So smart, Taylor!
I’m intrigued too! I think I’ll check it out this week. 🙂
The only way I knew how to schedule posts was with Tumblr (shout-out to Queue+). Thank you for the share! Really interested in scheduling tweets and grams 🙂 -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
I hadn’t even heard of that one! Scheduling is such a life saver.
This is super helpful! As a new blogger, I’m definitely learning the importance of social media and putting my content where people who might be interested can find it. I’ll have to check out some of these sites! Thanks for sharing!
Glad to help, Lauren! 🙂
I had never heard of Ahalogy, can’t wait to check it out!
Monica | monica-galvan.com
Awesome! I hope you love it, Monica. 🙂
Actually the big difference between Hootsuite and Buffer scheduling is that Hootsuite offers the Autoschedule feature which calculates the best times to post for maximum exposure per network. Buffer simply does not offer such a feature.
Well I guess there are two big differences then. 😉
i don’t personally schedule any posts. I never know what I should schedule ahead of time. Should I focus on promoting old blog posts?
I recommend scheduling posts from similar blogs/websites — basically, anything your audience would enjoy reading or find useful. Also, scheduling old blog posts or new posts a few times a day 🙂
I love to pre-schedule my social media. I’ve been needing one for instagram. Thanks for sharing!
Glad to help, Sarah! 🙂
Latergramme is awsome! I use it for one of my clients and it works so well.
For Pinterest, I started using Board Booster and it’s amazing. It creates seceret boards for you, so you pin to the seceret boards and then they scedule those pins according to your settings.
The “suggested words” of Ahalogy sounds awesome. Going to look into that. Thanks for an awesome read!
Ohh Board Booster sounds enticing! So you pin to secret boards and then does it put those pins on public boards eventually?
Yes, you choose the boards you want to schedule to and choose how many pins you want to pin per day. Let say you have a Biz Tips board and you want to pin 3 pins per day on that board. Board Booster creates a secret Biz Tips board and you just pin to the secret board. Then Board booster uses the pins on the secret Biz Tips board to pin 3 pins per day on your public Biz Tips board. Does that make sense? You can also choose if you want them to delete those pins on the secret board once they have pinned them on the public board.
Hey Michaela! I’ve been interested in a Pinterest scheduler, so thank you for recommending Board Booster. I’m looking into starting a free trial soon 🙂
Happy that you found my comment useful. 🙂 Board Booster is awesome.
Hey Melyssa! Thanks so much for this post. I’ve been looking for a Pinterest scheduler for a long time, so I’m going to look into Ahalogy 🙂
Awesome! Glad to hear that. I hope you like Ahalogy! 🙂
I use a program called Sendible, which is nice because it allows me to build a database of tweets and shares that I can recycle, so even if I can’t find new content for a week or so, I’m still sharing awesome stuff. Definitely takes off the pressure.
Ohh that’s genius! I’ll have to check that one out, too! Thanks for the suggestion.
I’ve just started using Latergramme, and it’s not too bad !
Cool! I think I’ll start using it this week, too. 🙂
I use Buffer & Hootsuite but have not heard of the others, can’t wait to check them out! Thanks for sharing!

Buffer and Hootsuite are awesome! 🙂
I love Latergramme! It helps me post to Instagram so much more often than I did before. I also use Buffer for Twitter which is great and I’m definitely going to check out Ahalogy 🙂
That’s awesome! I’ve been using Latergramme recently and I love it, too!
Hi @Melyssa – thanks for showing a lil’ LaterLove! Try Latergramme and let us know what you think 😛 You can tweet to @Latergramme or @byStephie to share your experience!
Hi Stephanie! I’ve been using it this week and it’s awesome! Definitely enjoying it so far. 🙂 Thanks for reading!
I use Hootesuite and love it! I should look into Ahalogy. Maybe I’ll use Pinterest more if I do. 🙂 I don’t think I need help posting on Instagram. I do go through periods of time when I don’t use it as much, but I love it so I’m usually on it constantly.
That’s awesome that you enjoy Hootsuite. That’s a great one. Definitely check out Ahalogy! They’re site is pretty useful. 🙂
Great information! Thanks for sharing! I need to try these!
Glad to help, Leslie. 🙂
I’ve been wanting to automate my pinterest and instagram posts so thank you for this!
Danielle | D is for Dreamer
So happy to help! Automating is a lifesaver.
You just saved my life with Latergramme! I run social media for Cultured Maven Magazine and I was hoping they had an app for this!
Awesome!! So happy it helps, Asia. 🙂
Also I have just started using Iconosqaure to track my stats on Instagram and its a lifesaver. For sure something to check out if you want to see what posts are creating success for the account.
Totally! I’m a big fan of Iconosquare, too! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Thanks so much for explaining the difference between hootsuite and buffer! I had a hard time deciding which one was better.
Glad to help. 🙂
I use Buffer and Latergram currently, but I’m checking out Ahalogy right now! Great post!
Audra | http://southernnyorker.com/
Awesome, Audra! I love Buffer and Latergramme. 🙂
MUST. TRY. SCHEDULING. …. MUST.
It is time to move this task to the very top of my to-do list and leave it there! I have started looking at these programs so many times, but never have followed through and actually done it. And it is killing (and I mean KILLING!) my time management. I was trying to choose between Buffer and CoSchedule, and I almost decided to go with CoSchedule. However, you are making rethink Buffer. Thanks for the post. Following you everywhere so I don’t miss anything. 🙂
Awesome, Wendy! It can definitely save a lot of time. I recommend trying them all out (usually they have free trials) so you can see which one you prefer. 🙂
And thank you so much for following! That really means a lot and I’m so glad that you’ve found value here!
Awesome post! I’ve tried all but Ahalogy (but I am definitely going to check it out!!). Currently CoSchedule is my absolute favorite and I use Latergramme on occasion as well. All are very easy to use and offer generally the same thing. I’m hooked on CoSchedule just because it’s so visual. I like having my editorial calendar and all the social media associated to each post all located in the same place. It can look messy sometimes, but it makes me feel so much more organized!
That’s so awesome, Keating! I was never able to get into CoSchedule, but I know the people who love it, REALLY love it. So that’s awesome that you’ve found value in it. 😀
I am so going to check latergramme out.. like Now. =)
Yay! 🙂
Shortly after my comment, hootsuite also launched the feature of prescheduling Instagram photos. Very good too! Check it out if haven’t. 🙂
Yessss! I need to check that out. Have you been using it?
I just discovered your blog (how didn’t I hear about it earlier?) while I was googling how to make a media kit (thanks for the tips by the way!)! Anyway, I wish Latergramme was available for Windows phones…. but I love Buffer! Have yet to try out Hootsuite though – really don’t want to pay for Buffer so thanks for the tip!!
Well, glad you found me here eventually, Van! 🙂
It’s tough to find good quality free tools, but Buffer is great!
Definitely! 🙂
I’ve been using buffer but I might try hootsuite for awhile! Also, I am planning on using some of those wordpress plug in ones when I switch over here soon!
Hootsuite is a neat one! They recently added Instagram to their scheduling capabilities, so that might be useful, too.
I’m looking into them now! Thank so much Mel! xoxo
I need to try all of these!
Hope these help you out! 🙂
This is an extremly helpful post! I can never keep track of my social media updates and it really frustrates me! I need to try them al! Thank you thank you thank you!!
I’m so glad you found this helpful, Vicky! Thanks so much for reading 🙂
I love all your posts and i find them very helpful for new bloggers like myself! Thank you for all this help!
Nice roundup…I’m currently using boardbooster to schedule my pinterest posts and have been happy with it. I really need to up my game in facebook but facebook is just so frustrating for me. I like it on the personal side but the business side, not so much. 🙁 Thanks for the encouragement and ideas.
Oh I totally feel you, Amy! Have you considered joining a few Facebook groups to help you out and give you a little boost on there? You might find that makes Facebook a little more enjoyable and less stressful 🙂
Thanks Mel. I checked out your facebook group post and joined a few. I get confused as I try to follow/like others’ pages with my business page but fb doesn’t let me. Do most people then follow others back from their personal page? I would prefer to keep them separate.
Yes, most people use their personal page. The trick is making sure that your business page is linked to your personal page in your bio so that people can click over and like your page.
I use Buffer all the time and is one of my favorites blogging tools. The best thing I like about it is that it integrates with Twitter and Pinterest. Buffer is actually the best when comes to scheduling blog posts.
Awesome! So glad you’re already using these and finding them useful, Sam! 🙂
If I have a new blog (which I do) with a very small audience, then what would be the one monthly subscription I would want to start with? I’m leaning towards Ahalogy. Anyone have any suggestions?
I would start with Buffer or BoardBooster (which is not listed here, but is awesome…I need to update this article!). 🙂
Thanks!
I’ve been using Viraltag for the last month and I really like it. I can schedule my own and other blogs for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. I subscribe to their blogger option and pay $12 p/mon. So, far it’s working well for me since I have all of my platforms in one place instead of using different programs.
That’s awesome Carmen! Glad you found something that works for you.
Hey Melyssa, I was not aware Co-schedule had auto share. I use it to evaluate my titles before I send a post out, but it certainly has my attention. I have also recently joined Hootsuite and am getting to know that. I haven’t even begun to think about the auto for Pinterest. Thanks for the post, it really had my attention. Rachel.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Awesome post! I’m using Coschedule on a trial basis and it’s nice but I don’t like the image vs. link where you have to choose if you want an image. I am loving Buffer and Latergramme though.
Hey Melyssa! Thanks so much for checking out CoSchedule and including it in your list. I just shared this with our team—we really appreciate it! 🙂
Wow! This is so helpful. Being somewhat new to blogging, we (my friends who work with me on our blog) are slowly learning more and more about how to use social media to market our content. This is great information to know. Thanks!
OMG Yes! I just started to really use Coschedule last weekend and let me just say it has changed the way I blog! It is absolutely AMAZING!
Thanks so much for the list!
Awesome!
Hey Chelsea! Thanks so much for reading! 🙂
Nice list, I havent heard about ahalogy so I am going to check it out.
Awesome, let me know what you think of it!
Ahhhh no wonder I haven’t heard of Ahalogy, I haven’t received that invite yet. Great post, I really like Buffer, Tailwind and Sprout Social. Hootsuite hates me, LOL!
Oh no! I’m sure it doesn’t really hate you, but I’m glad you love other programs >_< Thanks for commenting Kelly!
Ahalogy sound new to me, I think I should try this. At the moment I use the plugin Blog2Social, have you heard about it?
I haven’t, but let me know what you think of Ahalogy! 🙂
Latergramme is awesome. You will absolutely love it! If I understood correctly Ahalogy is free to use? Thanks! So much to learn with so little time!
Yes, I’m pretty sure it’s still free!
I just started with buffer for scheduling and socialhub.io for our task distribution in the team, thanks! great advice! 🙂
Great job automatic your social media! Best of luck to you, Marco 🙂
Hey Melyssa!
I watched your webinar last week and you mentioned a pinterest scheduler in it but I forgot the name and can’t find it anywhere! Aaahh! Nightmare!
Could you refresh my memory please?
Thanks! 🙂
Boardbooster 🙂
CoSchedule has a Chrome Extension now – which is perfect for using to schedule social media from any page! I like to use it for pulling content from my sponsors’ blogs. 🙂
Oh that’s an amazing tip! Thanks for sharing with us, Kimi! 😀
I love this blog post so much Melyssa! I litterally started using buffer 6minutes ago hahaha
Haha what a coincidence! I’ve heard great things about Buffer and I hope it helps you lots! Keep me posted my friend 🙂
I love this! Currently using Socialdraft for all social media (FB, Twitter, IG, and Pinterest), they are great since they have this Calendar & CSV upload for bulk scheduling. Also, their Instagram scheduling is on point and doesn’t need an app!
As for editing images on the side using Canva which is also a great tool for images on the fly. 🙂
Wow! It sounds like you’ve got social media scheduling down to a science! Great job, Alex, and please keep me posted on your progress 😀
Thanks for giving me some new names.
Currently I am running on Buffer & Social Sprout.
They are awesome.
Those are great tools! Best of luck to you, Puneet! 🙂
Thanks for sharing a few of the tools you use! I don’t currently schedule any of my social media but am planning on starting to be more consistent and grow views.
That’s great to hear! Consistency is key and social media planning tools can definitely help make that easier for you. Good luck, Graham! 😀
Thank you for this post. I started on Hootsuite a while back, and then neglected it. I plan to get started back on it soon in 2017.
That’s awesome to hear! Best of luck in 2017, Tia! 🙂
Melyssa, how do you make do with the 100 posts per profile? I know I share heaps of posts from people every day and I’m afraid I might run through that asap. But the next plan up from the $10 one is $99 which makes me what to cry lol
Thank you so much for this post! It’s been like a full time job juggling all social media. Sometimes I get so overwhelmed with remembering to post that I just shut down and don’t post at all.
Hi Dyana! Hopefully this post helps you figure out where to invest your energy so that you’re able to reach people effectively without feeling overwhelmed. 🙂
Good luck!
For pinterest, I trust no other tool except PinPinterest com. I have friends who got their accounts suspended due to using bots/tools. But this isn’t the case with PinPinterest…
Its intelligent algorithms make sure my account is ban-safe by running at safe speeds. Also, it pins only content relevant to my business. It is free to use, runs on the cloud, optimised for mobile devices and has Pin Scheduling feature…
For struggling bloggers is it really recommended to buy or pay such services? How effective is it on a scale?
Hi, Jonathan! Luckily, many of these programs offer free plans. Later (formerly Latergramme) is amazing for Instagram, and a free account will give you 1 scheduled post per day, for free! Buffer and HootSuite also have very generous free plans. I don’t think you need to pay until you absolutely feel like you need it.
This is a great article! There are so many options right now on the market that is overwhelming. Do you by chance know about eClincher? That’s what I’m using right now. I’ve recently decided to subscribe, but I’m still looking for opinions. Right now I feel it’s a great tool with an awesome pricing. However I don’t seem to get many reviews on it. Hope to hear back from you!
Hi Raul, I am not familiar with eClincher. I currently use MeetEdgar to schedule my social media posts, but another alternative to that platform is SmarterQueue, which is gaining a lot of traction in the marketplace for offering similar features at a lower price point. I also love Tailwind and BoardBooster for Pinterest, specifically 🙂
Hello, Planoly automatically posts on IG now. Started a couple of days ago. It’s exclusively for Instagram and I love it!
Saw this – very cool, Jessica! 🙂
Hi Melyssagriffin, Thanks for the great
overview. Have you heard about SocialBu.It has amazing features
including IG stories scheduling, Post from RSS feed, Social media
listening, insights, and many more. so I would like to suggest you
compare SocialBu with them. I hope you will definitively find it better
than others.
